The Morning Routine That Changed My Body

Lemon Water

During the mornings, I have a routine of drinking lemon water on an empty stomach. I slice half a lemon and place the slices into a cup of water and then squeeze the rest of the lemon into the cup. This routine is widely known across the health and wellness space as one that can help support a healthy body.

Personally, when I drink lemon juice in the morning, I find myself having a more regulated appetite, less bloating, more energy, and a clear mind. I have truly found so many benefits from this simple routine. Even the act of drinking the water, delaying coffee, and being present has rippled positive benefits into my life.

The Scientific Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water

  • Hydration: Most of us don't get enough fluids throughout the day, and starting with a cool glass of lemon water in the morning can be a refreshing way to kickstart your hydration.

  • Vitamin C boost: Lemons are a good source of vitamin C, an important antioxidant that can help protect your cells from damage and boost your immune system.

  • Digestive aid: The citric acid in lemons may help stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can aid digestion.

  • Weight management: Some studies suggest that drinking lemon water may help promote feelings of fullness and reduce calorie intake throughout the day. However, more research is needed to confirm this benefit.

  • Fresh breath: Lemons have natural antibacterial properties that can help freshen breath.

A Lemon Water Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (240ml) filtered water

  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) fresh lemon juice (about ½ lemon)

  • Pinch of Himalayan pink salt (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Wash your lemon.

  2. Squeeze the lemon to get 1 tablespoon of juice.

  3. Add the lemon juice and water to a glass.

  4. (Optional) Add a pinch of Himalayan pink salt for extra electrolytes.

  5. Stir well and enjoy!

Tips:

  • You can adjust the amount of lemon juice to your taste.

  • For a cooler drink, add ice.

  • Experiment with adding other ingredients like slices of cucumber, ginger, or mint for extra flavor.

  • While this recipe calls for filtered water, you can use tap water if it's safe to drink in your area.

An Important Note

When drinking lemon water make sure to dilute the lemon juice with water. Straight lemon juice can be too acidic for your teeth. Also, it's a great idea to use a straw to protect your tooth enamel from the acid in the juice and even to brush your teeth after drinking.
